Nathan Coley’s Appearances at ACCA in Melbourne

Nathan Coley is a Scottish artist interested in how architecture makes meaning – how it is ‘worn’, as he says, by the people who live with it. He’s also interested in the social aspects of our built environment, by the communities that populate them.

Nathan was a Turner Prize contender and now has a big show on at ACCA in Melbourne (until 24th July), transforming the ACCA’s interior into a kind of civic plaza, with large concrete platforms – or plinths – that invite people to sit and loiter and contemplate the other elements of this show…elements that include a light sculpture in the form of a tree which adds a warm carnival feel to the space, and a mirrored wall reflecting the world from the sky down.

There is also a lecture on architecture, voiced by Cate Blanchett, and a model of Melbourne’s iconic Scots Church.
